Bullet Time for Canadian MMA Athlete

Canada’s Peterborough Examiner tells the tale of Nick Penner, a former amateur kickboxing champ who sustained two bullet wounds to the hip only a few months prior to his 2007 MMA debut.

Penner was working security at a nightclub when a disgruntled patron returned and opened fire on the doormen. “It’s hard to train when you got bullet holes through you,” he told Cary Castagna. Don’t I know it.

Penner, a heavyweight, is 8-1 as a pro and joins an ignoble group of combat athletes who have been wounded by weapons fire. He was originally scheduled to face former UFC tournament champion Mark Kerr last Saturday -- Kerr pulled out with a knee injury.
