Inside the Venue: Prudential Center

A quick look inside the Prudential Center …

Location: Newark, N.J.
Built: 2007
Cost: $375 million
Seating Capacity: 18,500
Architect: Populous

The Prudential Center will play host to its third UFC show on Saturday, when UFC 128 “Shogun vs. Jones” arrives in Newark, N.J. The event, which will air live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, will feature a five-round light heavyweight title fight pairing champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua with challenger Jon Jones. Eleven other bouts, including the co-main event between former WEC champions Urijah Faber and Eddie Wineland, complete the UFC 128 lineup.

Workers broke ground on the facility on Oct. 3, 2005 and opened it two years later. Costs for the project, which totaled $375 million, were split between the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and the city of Newark. Its headquarters within walking distance of the arena, Prudential Financial purchased the naming rights for $105.3 million in January 2007. The Prudential Center is often called “The Rock,” in reference to Prudential’s corporate logo. Located in downtown Newark, just two blocks from Newark Penn Station, the arena can be accessed by New Jersey Transit, PATH and Amtrak. Home to the Devils and the Seton Hall University men’s basketball team, the Prudential Center features a 350-seat gourmet restaurant, 76 luxury suites and a 4,800-square-foot big screen LED television, which faces Newark Penn Station.

Zuffa LLC has visited the arena twice previously with UFC 78 “Validation,” headlined by a bout between Rashad Evans and Michael Bisping on Nov. 17, 2007, and UFC 111 “St. Pierre vs. Hardy,” which featured a five-round title matching pitting welterweight king Georges St. Pierre against Dan Hardy on March 27, 2010. The 2011 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (March 25 and March 27), Lady Gaga (April 22), Usher (May 7), Katy Perry (June 19) and the 2011 NBA Draft (June 23) will follow the UFC into the Prudential Center.
