Strikeforce ‘Rockhold vs. Kennedy’ Preview

Lawler vs. Larkin

Middleweights

Robbie Lawler (19-8, 3-4 SF) vs. Lorenz Larkin (12-0, 3-0 SF)

The Matchup: Larkin had an eye-opening experience against Muhammed Lawal, as he was grounded and battered by the powerful wrestler before the 205-pound affair was stopped early in the second round. Although it was later ruled a no-contest when “King Mo” failed a post-fight drug screen, Larkin’s biggest weakness was exposed. “The Monsoon” gets a better stylistic pairing in Lawler, who is known for exciting brawls and brutal knockouts.

Lawler is coming off a first-round finish of Adlan Amagov in January, but in previous bouts against Tim Kennedy and Ronaldo Souza he struggled when forced to spend significant periods of time on his back. Lawler and Larkin are not likely to go the takedown route here, so expect something of a striker’s delight.

Larkin has a diverse arsenal of kicks, punches and knees that he can land quickly and accurately. He will want to circle away from Lawler’s power while keeping “Ruthless” at bay with jabs and leg kicks. Keeping Lawler off balance by changing levels with strikes and using unorthodox angles will limit knockout opportunities for the Illinois resident.

It will not be an easy task, however, as Lawler has good timing outside the pocket as he looks to set up his lead right hook or overhand left. However, if Larkin keeps his adversary guessing, there is the possibility that Lawler will become frustrated and launch into reckless pursuit, leaving himself even more vulnerable to counters. The UFC veteran is extremely difficult to finish with strikes, so Larkin’s conditioning must be on point. The Empire Training Center representative has battled back from adversity before, but Lawler has the type of power that does not offer much chance for recovery.

The Pick: If Larkin remains crisp, technical and fresh throughout, he could outpoint Lawler. He will start out getting the better of his veteran foe, but Lawler will bide his time and strike for a third-round TKO.
