7. Wes Sims vs. Frank Mir
UFC 43 “Meltdown”
June 6, 2003 | Las Vegas

Sims was a first-class heel during his brief stint in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and his ill-mannered behavior was on display in the first of two encounters with short-term rival Mir. Sims carried a sizeable amount of baggage with him when the giant heavyweight finally climbed into the Octagon for the first time. The hope was that Sims would behave himself while fighting under the UFC banner. He did not.

Mir quickly got the fight to the mat and looked to end it via submission. The Las Vegan eventually locked in two separate rear-naked chokes, but Sims successfully defended both. When Mir abandoned the chokes, he expertly switched to an armbar from his back. Sims stood and slammed Mir onto his head to break the lock, a defensive maneuver which remains acceptable protocol. What Sims did next shocked onlookers.

Despite being dumped on his head, Mir still had the 6-foot-9 behemoth’s arm. Sims then proceeded to stomp all over Mir’s cranium, knocking him senseless. Even though stomping on a downed opponent was forbidden, Sims elected to bypass the rulebook in order to smash Mir’s face. That decision led to a well-deserved disqualification.
