Claude Patrick vs. Daniel Roberts
The Matchup: Two submissions whizzes collide in this one. Roberts has one of the best all-around grappling pedigrees one could ask for in a fighter. An NAIA All-American wrestler, he has competed in high-level grappling tournaments, and his jiu-jitsu game is intuitive and advanced. Patrick is similarly gifted at getting the tap from opponents, though he lacks Roberts’ takedown chops.
Patrick is going to have to be better on the feet to win this one, using movement, angles and an effective jab to keep Roberts at bay. This is a tough order for three rounds, so if Patrick is going to win, it is probably going to have to come early from a big shot and follow-up finishing assault. Roberts has too many weapons on the mat and can always fall back on controlling top position if the jiu-jitsu matchup becomes a push.
The Pick: Look for Roberts to take half a round or so to figure out Patrick’s timing and then shoot for a takedown. Roberts should be able to score points and stifle Patrick’s attempts at sweeps and submissions, grinding out a late stoppage or a one-sided decision in a back-and-forth war.
