By The Numbers: Mackenzie Dern vs. Xiaonan Yan

On the periphery of title contention in the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s strawweight division, Mackenzie Dern needs only to check a few more boxes in her pursuit of the throne.

The 2015 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist will take on Xiaonan Yan in the UFC Fight Night 211 headliner on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Dern has rattled off five victories across her past six outings. She last appeared at UFC 273, where she eked out a split decision over Tecia Torres in their contentious April 9 encounter. Yan, meanwhile, enters the cage on the heels of back-to-back losses. She last competed on March 5, when she wound up on the wrong side of a split verdict against Marina Rodriguez in their UFC 272 pairing.

As Dern and Yan make final preparations for their forthcoming clash at 115 pounds, a look at some of the numbers that have accompanied them to this point:

29: Years of age for Dern, who was born in Phoenix on March 24, 1993.

7: Dern wins by submission, accounting for 58% of her career total (12). Her methods of choice: three rear-naked chokes, three armbars and one kneebar. Dern owns five other wins by decision (42%).

6: First-round finishes on the Dern resume, with only two of them having taken place outside the UFC. She dispatched Montana De La Rosa with a rear-naked choke at Legacy Fighting Championship 61 on Oct. 14, 2016, then used the same maneuver to dismiss Mandy Polk at Legacy Fighting Alliance 24 on Oct. 13, 2017.

25: Rounds completed by Dern as a professional mixed martial artist. She has gone the distance on seven different occasions and carries a 5-2 record in those bouts.

75: Combined victories between the seven women—Torres, Nina Nunes, Virna Jandiroba, Randa Markos, Hannah Cifers, Amanda Bobby Brundage and Ashley Yoder—Dern has defeated since she joined the UFC roster in 2018. They boast a .610 cumulative winning percentage at 75-47-1.

33: Years of age for Yan, who was born on June 16, 1989 in Liaoning, China.

7: Yan victories by knockout, or technical knockout, accounting for 47% of her career total (15). Her list of victims includes Jin Tang, Seo Hee Lim and Bayarmaa Munkhgerel. Yan holds eight other victories by decision (53%).

23: Seconds needed for Yan to put away Omnia Gamal with punches at an International Wushu Fighting Championship show on Jan. 31, 2016. More than six years later, it remains her fastest finish to date.

150: Significant strikes landed by Yan in a three-round unanimous decision over former Pancrase champion Syuri Kondo at UFC Fight Night 141 in November 2018. It established a personal high-water mark for the China Top Team star that stands to this day.

.657: Cumulative winning percentage between the six opponents—Kondo, Claudia Gadelha, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Angela Hill, Viviane Pereira and Kailin Curran—Yan has beaten since she linked arms with the UFC in 2017. They sport a combined record of 71-37.
