By the Numbers: UFC on ESPN 47

Jared Cannonier was both violent and prolific at UFC on ESPN 47.

“The Killa Gorilla” set a middleweight striking record as he rolled past Marvin Vettori via unanimous decision in Saturday’s headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Perhaps the only thing more impressive than Cannonier’s output was the sturdiness of Vettori’s chin in defeat. Cannonier has won now four of his last five Ultimate Fighting Championship appearances, and his eye-popping performance may be enough to propel him into another 185-pound title shot sooner than many expected.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC on ESPN 47, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

241: Significant strikes landed by Cannonier, the most ever by a UFC middleweight in a single bout. It’s also the fourth-highest total in promotion history for a fighter in any weight class. “The Killa Gorilla landed 173 significant strikes to the head, 39 to the body and 29 to the legs of his opponent. In defeat, Vettori landed 153 significant strikes — 117 to the head, 15 to the body and 21 to the legs.

82: Significant strikes landed by Cannonier in a lopsided Round 2 in which he appeared to be on the verge of finishing Vettori in multiple occasions. By comparison, Vettori landed 24 significant strikes in the frame.

0: Times that Vettori has been finished in 27 professional outings. “The Italian Dream” is 8-7 in fights that go the distance.

4: Takedowns landed in six attempts for Cannonier, who logged 3:07 of control time. That’s the most takedowns surrendered by Vettori since his second UFC bout, when Antonio Carlos Jr. also took him down four times in a unanimous decision victory at UFC 207 on Dec. 30, 2016. Vettori was successful on his lone takedown attempt against Cannonier but secured just 28 seconds of control time in the fight.

80: Significant strikes landed by Arman Tsarukyan in a third-round technical knockout victory against Joaquim Silva in the evening’s lightweight co-main event. The Russian notably held a 41-to-2 advantage in significant ground strikes, as he sealed his victory with a salvo of ground-and-pound at the 3:25 mark of Round 3. Though he wobbled his opponent in the second round, Silva landed just 23 significant strikes overall.

5: Victories for Pat Sabatini since 2021. That’s the most of any UFC featherweight during that timeframe. Sabatini defeated Lucas Almeida via second-round submission in a featured bout on Saturday.

85: Total strikes by which Sabatini outlanded Almeida in the lopsided affair. Sabatini also outlanded his foe by a 27-to-2 count in significant strikes and secured two of three takedowns for 6:27 of control time.

35: Combined significant strikes by which Nicolas Dalby outlanded Muslim Salikhov over the final 10 minutes of their welterweight scrap. Salikhov held a 27-21 edge in significant strikes in Round 1, but couldn’t match the pace and pressure of his opponent down the stretch, as Dalby captured a unanimous decision triumph.

65: Significant strikes landed by Alessandro Costa in an impressive second-round stoppage of Jimmy Flick at flyweight. The Brazilian connected on 71 percent of his attempts while landing 37 significant strikes to the head, 12 to the body and 16 to the legs. Flick landed just 14 significant strikes and failed on all four of his takedown attempts.

4: Submission victories in UFC competition for Kyung Ho Kang, tying him with Aljamain Sterling and Marlon Vera for third most in the history of the bantamweight division. Kang finished Cristian Quinonez with a rear-naked choke 2:25 into the opening round of their preliminary clash.

102: Significant strikes landed by Carlos Hernandez in a technical unanimous decision win against Denys Bondar at flyweight. That figure included 87 significant strikes to the head. Bondar, meanwhile, landed 76 significant strikes and 37 to the head.

181: Total strikes landed by Tereza Bleda in a unanimous decision triumph over Gabriella Fernandes at flyweight. By comparison, Fernandes landed 47.

10:51: Total control time for Bleda. The Czech fighter landed three of 10 takedown attempts — one in each frame — and controlled her opponent on the canvas. Bleda also held a 33-to-0 edge in significant ground strikes landed.

11: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 13 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the light heavyweight bout between Zac Pauga and Modestas Bukauskas in favor of Pauga. Judges Derek Cleary, Sal D’Amato and Anthony Maness saw things differently, however, giving Bukauskas a contentious unanimous decision triumph.
