New Blood

Don’t look now, but women’s featherweight has a new prospect.

Sara Collins announced her presence to the rest of the division at Bellator 293, where she submitted former Invicta FC titleholder Pam Sorenson with a scarf hold armlock 2:43 into the opening round of their clash at Pechanga Casino & Resort in Temecula, California, on Friday night. As a result of that effort, the Resilience Training Centre export makes her debut in the 145-pound rankings at No. 8.

While Collins’ victory marked the arrival of a fresh face in the weight class, a familiar one was also successful at Bellator 293, as Cat Zingano held off Leah McCourt in a matchup of Top 10 featherweights in the evening’s co-main event. An eventual showdown with top-ranked Cristiane Justino remains the dangling carrot for Zingano, and assuming “Cyborg” re-signs with Bellator MMA, it appears that she will get her wish sometime this year.

Elsewhere, Professional Fighters League kicked off its 2023 campaign in earnest by showcasing its defending featherweight and light heavyweight champions in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Both Brendan Loughnane and Rob Wilkinson delivered, increasing their winning streaks at the expense of former Ultimate Fighting Championship stars Marlon Moraes and Thiago Santos, respectively. Loughnane, who has won 12 of his last 13 professional appearances, gains entry to the men’s featherweight poll at No. 15, while Wilkinson, who is in the midst of a seven-fight unbeaten run, joins the light heavyweight rankings at 14th.
